Hence, the (politically–incorrect) title: “Santiago Matamoros” (“James the slayer of the Moors”). The Battle of Clavijo in 834/844 AD was mythical but the Second Battle of Albelda in 859 AD on which Clavijo was loosely–based was historical. Ramiro I of Asturias’ son and successor Ordono I and Garcia Iniguez of Pamplona crushed Musa ibn Musa al– Qasawi and his army. The Asturias victory gave rise to the centuries–old cult of “Santiago Matamoros” in the Iberian peninsula and became the foundation of Catholic Spanish identity. The great shrine of “Santiago de Compostela” and the continuing worldwide popularity of the “El Camino de Santiago” pilgrimage are testaments to that.<br /><br />This archaic hardwood ensemble of “Santiago Matamoros”\nwas a favorite of the collector Benito J Legarda, and it\nwas presented alone in the entrance hall of his Greenhills\nresidence, the way his famous primitive Santa Maria\nMagdalena was the only santo displayed in his living room.\nTheir placements were very telling of their importance and\nrarity to Legarda the connoisseur, considering the surprising\nlength and breadth of his discreet collection.
