Initially an architect, Orlina’s scientific background became the foundation of his sculpture. “I am not very mechanical but my science and architecture background are very important,” Orlina said. “If you don’t have the science and architectural background, you don’t know the practical limitations of your artwork. You must have a good design, but if it cannot be built, then you will have a problem. In architecture, function is as important as the design; it’s no good if it doesn’t work.”

Orlina pioneered glass sculpture in the Philippines, working with cold slabs of glass instead of putting glass through fire. Using this impressive technique, Orlina manages to create soft curves and sharp edges to create a truly multidimensional piece. Glass is a unique medium that allows itself to be viewed from multiple angles and Orlina masterfully manipulates depth and perspective to create an interactive piece as seen with this 2017 piece entitled Color of Amber V-07. Orlina’s mastery of light, form, and space truly shines in this piece.
