The artist references the famous\nstory of “The Gingerbread Man,” in which an elderly couple\nbakes a gingerbread man, only for it to be animated to\nlife and run away from the hungry couple. The gingerbread\nman then passes through an array of animal characters,\nincluding a cow and a pig, until a fox devours it in the end.<br /><br />Duffie Hufana Osental describes the tableau of characters\nin the work at hand in her article “The Nature of Desire,”\npublished in Contemporary Art Philippines. She notes:\n“Consider “Waiting for the Gingerbread Men,” with the presence of various characters in different poses (a seated\nwoman, cross legged and sandwiched between another\nversion of herself in a swimsuit reading a book, a man\npushing a wheelbarrow of which Humpty Dumpty is a\npassenger, and another version of the woman napping) and\nobjects culled from a myriad of sources (the Mad Hatter hat,\nthe rampaging Godzilla, the Sacred Heart) and it’s difficult\nnot to make comparisons with a Jacopo Pontormo scene\ncrowded with Christian and Greco-Roman mythological\nfigures, dead popes, and secular Italian nobility.”<br /><br />Drawing from the enduring children’s story, Antonio’s\ntableau of figures and their distressed expressions and gestures subtly imply waiting and anticipating the arrival of\none’s “gingerbread man,” who would eventually fulfill the\ncarnal desires of one’s erotic consciousness. Here, “eating\nthe gingerbread man” manifests a double entendre, in\nwhich such accomplishment would profoundly satisfy\nthe cravings of the flesh and the yearnings for emotional\nwarmth and intimacy.<br /><br />Critic and poet Vicente Ignacio de Veyra coined the term\n“Blue Funk Erotica” to describe Antonio’s distinct depiction\nand implication of eroticism in his works. Antonio uses\nthe concept of eroticism not in an explicit manner but\ninstead centers it on concepts of desolation, dejection, and melancholia, effectively adding a more profound layer of\nunderstanding of human inclinations for coitus. Through\nthis, Antonio fosters the idea that sexual desire is not\nmerely the cravings of the flesh; it also revolves around\nthe satisfaction and fulfillment of one’s thirst for intimacy,\naffection, and emotional attachment. <br /><br />In the process, Antonio explores and augments layers of\ncreative discourses to the often-taboo concepts of human\nsexuality and sexual desires.
