However, what differentiated Pereira with Amorsolo is his usage of a “sweeter” color palette, using shades of oranges and pinks to play with his shadows and hues.

The lot at hand, a 1940 work entitled Under the Mango Tree, shows Pereira’s aptitude for the countryside. Set in a picturesque rural area, Pereira depicts a group of people sitting under a mango tree, with one girl in a pink dress cooking for the people working in the fields. Through his dazzling colors and his keen attention to detail, Jose Pereira captures into painting the quiet pastoral scenes of the past and its lush greeneries.

Pereira was among the staff of the then-American run Philippines Free Press and later on became its chief artist. He left the publication in 1938 where soon after he resumed painting.
