His landscapes, however, curiously teeter between illusion and reality— rendering what is supposed to be a familiar image of the natural world and then, through a curious rhythm of textures, turns it into something just subtly unnatural. Such is the poetic surrealism of Sanso’s paintings that works by drawing the viewer into what is a visual experience of estrangement. Journalist Barbara Mae Naredo describes the artist in a February 9, 1972 issue of Graphic: “...Sanso comes nearest to the idea of the artist for whom beauty is alienation, a poetic or even physical transport which returns to things a memory of their own strangeness.”

There is a deep sense of metaphysical anguish embedded in the simultaneous familiarity and unfamiliarity of Sanso’s landscapes as they seem to question their own reality and physicality within the composition: Is the landscape familiar? Is it even real?

Perhaps, much of the poetry of Sanso’s surrealism comes from its own ambiguity, the lack of any real answer to such existential questions. That the artist seems to draw from a sense of postwar trauma and a personal struggle of belongingness as a Spanish-born who grew up in the Philippines and lived in Paris is thus no coincidence. Just as Sanso struggles in the search for a certainly rooted sense of place in this world, his landscapes do too.
