Though unlike the commonly held notion that a new perspective requires a subversion of the old, Oliveros’ practice adds to the timeless tradition. He takes what works and adds a renewed sense of aesthetic interest to the subject matter. This can be seen in his unconventional controlled and relatively sparse, but conscious use of hues and palettes in his portraits, effectively showcasing his technical understanding of application and color theory. But the clean and almost flawless finish of his works also extends to his practice. In an interview with Purveyr, Oliveros shared his meticulous routine whenever he would create. “I want everything that I’m going to use, mixed already. And it should be clean as much as possible because for me it reflects the work I do. It’s really clean, so I can work comfortably.” Oliveros states. The artist puts a heavy premium on the idea that the very process of something is just as important as the end product itself.
