Spanish-born, the Sanso-Pedret family migrated to the Philippines when Sanso was about four years old, settling at Paco, Manila and setting up a wrought-iron shop that lasted for seven years. However, when the family refused to help the Japanese war business during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, this family venture was halted.

Sanso had no problem settling in the Philippines, however even then he knew that he was different from the other Filipino children. Blond-haired and blue-eyed, he stood out in a sea of brown. Though there are Spaniards in the country, the family also did not fit in with them as the Sanso-Pedret were Catalunians and the majority were Castellian. The Sansos further differentiated themselves when, unlike many, they were strongly against the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

Sanso studied at the University of the Philippines but his art flourished when he moved to Europe. Once again, Sanso found himself in a foreign land with only rudimentary knowledge of its culture and language. However despite these difficulties – or perhaps even because of it – he transformed into the proficient artist he is known today. “Going abroad is not merely buying a ticket and staying in a hotel,” he said. “For me it was facing myself. It was in Europe that I faced myself; I was in complete anonymity and loneliness out there.”

With this lot in hand, entitled A Rising Day, showcases Sanso’s alienation and loneliness. However, the angst commonly associated with Sanso is gone, replaced with the idyllic view of a twisting river from above. Utilizing light blues and greens that brightens up the canvas, Sanso makes masterful use of colors and perspective to show the enthralling vision of nature. A multi-faceted artist, Sanso continues to be one of the most innovative and sought after artists of the country.
