When Baldemor started his professional painting career in the early 1970s, Paete immediately ascended the role of protagonist, an endearing muse to his creative soul.

\nIn the 1972 Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual, Baldemor won the coveted first prize thanks to his mural work “Paete I.” In the AAP Annual of the following year, he again won the first prize for another work centering on Paete, aptly titled “Paete II.” From these watershed\nmoments in Baldemor’s career, it has become clear that Paete is the fountain that nourishes his creative soul.

\nThe 1974 work at hand, titled Ang Lampara, forms part of Baldemor’s early years as a professional painter. It centers around the image of a lamp situated in a multicolored ornate house, which Baldemor renders in a cubist configuration. The overall architectural style of the house evokes the old bahay na bato, which in turn exudes an atmosphere of nostalgia. The lampara lights up not only the house but the entire composition as well, making it an intriguing object within the work.

\nAs we take a closer look at the lamp, it becomes clear that Baldemor uses its image as an allegory of the illuminating light of wisdom, which we first hone in our childhood in our respective homes through the enlightening teachings of our parents, particularly our mothers, who are regarded as the “ilaw ng tahanan” (light of the home). In Baldemor’s case, it is symbolic of his love for his native Paete, the place that first cast a shining light on his artistic flair and to which he has always been indebted.
