Home to two National Artists (Lucio San Pedro for music and Carlos “Botong” Francisco for visual arts), Angono is also the site of the oldest known work of art in the Philippines, the Angono Petroglyphs. It makes sense for this town to produce a number of prolific artists, one of which is National Artist nominee Jose Blanco.<br /><br />\nBorn in 1932, Blanco belonged to a family of fishermen whose livelihood depends on the bountiful and beautiful Laguna Bay. As he continued his formal education at the University of Santo Tomas, his heart and art did not stray from home, with his murals and paintings featuring the Tagalog pastorale. Art critic Alice Guillermo called his style folk realism, notable for its lush earthy colors and sharpness in depicting its Filipino subject matter.<br /><br />\nThis 1999 work features Blanco’s favorite subjects – the Filipino country scene. Occupying a large part of the painting is a family surrounded by their season’s harvest of pineapple and bananas. The father is surveying the crops and the four children play around. Opposite the father is the mother, holding the fifth child, an infant, in her arms. Blanco liberally uses warm yellows and green and the result is a romantic depiction of the simple countryside and the intimacy of the family unit.
