Known for his paintings and sculptures,\nLuz also made collages, took photos, and did printmaking. He was part of the second generation of neo-realists that emerged in the Philippine art society post-war. As a painter, Luz was described by artist Fernando Zobel as a “painter’s painter,” with other artists studying his compositions and form. In his paintings and prints, Luz’s figure, structure, movement, and geometry is notable, with his sensibilities described as “stark, elemental, simple.”

\nThe early 1950s has proven to be a turning point for Luz\n– in a span of a year, he returned to the Philippines after spending years studying abroad, held a one-man show at the Manila Hotel, and became the elected president of the prestigious Art Association of the Philippines (AAP). AAP provided support for Manila artists for years to come, acting as an avenue for the growing modernist crowd.

\nHowever, while he is known for his paintings, Luz is also a prolific sculptor. His murals and sculptures adore multiple public spaces in Manila, including the Anito at the Batasang Pambansa Complex as well as multiple fixtures at the National Museum of the Philippines Complex. The lot at hand, a 2020 sculpture entitled Anito #16, has all the sensibilities his masterpieces had. “ Cold steel beams are coaxed to curve and metal sheets are crafted into dynamic facets,” describes Carlos Quijon\nJr. of Luz’s sculptures in a CNN article. “In these works material is imbued grace that allows hardwood and metal to transform into nimble objects.” Anito #16 fits all these criteria. Luz, in his masterful technique, manipulates metal to create an impactful sculpture.
