That, or a 1980s reproduction of an English mirror by the uberstylish Antonio brothers Chito and Ramon for one of their rich and chic clients in Forbes Park. However, upon close inspection, it reveals itself to be, of all things, a Filipino mirror, specifically an unusual Filipino Art Nouveau mirror, in the most sophisticated way.

The mirror’s basic form takes its cue from eighteenth century French and English salon mirrors --- Louis XIV, Regence, Louis XV, Louis XVI, Queen Anne, George I, George II, George III --- which were usually installed above fireplaces and in between boiseries/wall panels in Paris and London. The main frame itself is carved to simulate branches; the inner frame is of beadwork. All around the frame are gently creeping “ampalaya” and “saging” leaves with “melendres” and “melenguas” flowers of delicate openwork; at the lower third of the frame are a pair of native “kulasisi” birds in a nod to Thomas Chippendale. The frame is surmounted by a remarkable openwork crest of Filipino leaves and flowers --- a refined but opulent bouquet of ampalaya, bigaa, papua, and saging leaves, with catmon, melendres, melenguas, sampaguita, talampunay, ylang–ylang flowers --- over intertwined anahaw and banana leaves. There is something about the carving of the leaves and flowers which is reminiscent of the artisanal furniture commissioned by the aesthete Dr Maximo Viola. There is something about the style of the leaves and flowers, and the delicacy and fragility of the carving, which is reminiscent of the great frame of Tuason provenance by Romualdo de Jesus currently in the Paulino & Hetty Que collection. It is a splendid Art Nouveau mirror, Filipino style.

Filipino Art Nouveau (also known loosely and rather\nincorrectly as “estilo Tampinco”), a nationalistic style,\nactually had its genesis in the late 1860s, not long after the\n“new movements” in France and England in the 1850s which\npresaged French Art Nouveau and the English Arts & Crafts\nMovement. Its beginnings were directly related to the life–\nchanging Opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, which opened\nthe floodgates for all the new developments in Europe ---\nscientific, medical, intellectual, artistic, political, economic,\nsocial, even eccentric --- to enter Filipinas, for better or for\nworse

The earliest dated example of Filipino Art Nouveau is an\n80% solid silver coffee set with anahaw leaf, banana leaf,\nand betel nut motifs by Crispulo Zamora & Sons from 1875\ncurrently in the Paulino & Hetty Que collection. Its existence\nshows that the use of native motifs was already mainstream\nby that time --- the last quarter of the nineteenth century\n(1875–1900), and that the earlier, finer examples of the new\nstyle in architectural motifs, furniture design, and decorative\nitems were already flourishing, contrary to previous thought\nand perception.","lot_group":"FURNITURE","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":900000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":900000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":1081440,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":83,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/1/1/lot/79.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":78,"next":80,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
