Characterized with spontaneity and gestural brushstrokes, there is perhaps no other artist credited with the heading of the birth and growth of abstract expressionism than National Artist Jose T. Joya. As shown in this 1961 piece, Joya’s sense of vibrant colors, his dynamic spontaneity, and his vigorous composition is ever- present. “In creating an artwork, the artist is concretising his need for communication,” Joya has said and through his harmonious and lively artworks, Joya's voice and stories shine through.
