However, other works represented a lighter\nfacet of his artistry during this period, such as this 1947 work titled\nLabandera.

\nLorenzo’s contemporary, Galo Ocampo, once noted that “there is no\nsentimentalism in his art.” In all its vividness and exuberance, this\nparticular work may be interpreted as an avenue to channel Lorenzo’s\nrenewed spirit of optimism for the post-war years. However, it does not serve as catharsis for the artist. Instead, Lorenzo focuses more on\nthe subject as he observed it, without any indication of saccharinity.

\nEven in his genre portraits, Lorenzo boldly rejected and rebelled\nagainst the idealization the conservatives propagated. Alice\nGuillermo writes in Diosdado Magno Lorenzo: Art Rebel to Legend:\n“In portraits, Lorenzo resisted idealizing his subjects: his kind of\nrealism was honest and straightforward; he was not inclined to\nprettify but to paint his subjects as he saw them, as in his portraits of\nyoung girls or old women. His representation of people, places, and\nthings arose from a purely personal point of view with no element\nof rhetoric.”

\nIn this particular piece, Lorenzo depicts a labandera in warm colors\nthat are scantily applied. Thick impastos are employed in lieu of\nintricate details, indicating an emphasis on the essential rather\nthan the minutiae of everyday activity. Leonidas Benesa notes this\npractice, writing, “Lorenzo was the first Filipino painter to attract\nattention to paint as paint on canvas, in impasto so that color and\ntexture are one…done in vibrations of warm colors and rich in\ntextural qualities.”

\nSumming up these inherent qualities makes Lorenzo an unabashed\nmodernist—a bona fide art rebel.
