Castro\nfirst worked as an apprentice at the Nicanor Lopez\npainting shop in Cabanatuan from 1922 to 1925,\nwhere he learned the rudiments of elementary\ndrawing. He later earned a living from doing\ncrayon sketches of portrait sitters. \n

In 1927, Castro opened a small sign shop in\nBaliuag, Bulacan. The eminent Fabian de la\nRosa would visit Baliuag each time he painted\nits stunning landscape in the early 1930s. It was\nthere where Castro crossed paths with De la Rosa,\neventually becoming a protégé of the latter.

De la Rosa honed Castro’s creative flai , teaching\nhim the fundamentals of painting. Although\nCastro is primarily known as one of the leading\nmasters of the still life genre, these works\nshowcase another facet of his artistry—landscape painting. Here, De la Rosa’s influence is noticeable.\nCarefully delineated brushstrokes and application\nof subdued colors produce a degree of realism akin\nto De la Rosa’s. Castro’s works tell of a storied past,\nwhere man and nature harmoniously commune\nand prosperity abounds.

Castro was a member of the board of the Mabini\nArtists Association and Lakan ng Sining ng Bulacan.\nTwo of his paintings, Mangga at Suman and\nLumpia at Puto, were gifted by President Diosdado\nMacapagal to Generalissimo Francisco Franco and\ndisplayed alongside works of European masters\nat the Royal Palace of El Pardo in Spain. Another\nset of his works, Sugpo at Alimango and Pesang\nDalag, were the favorites of President Macapagal\nand his wife, Eva, and were proudly hung in the\nMalacañang’s dining hall.
