Maps and Views of Old Maynila. Manila: Maharnilad, 1971. Black-and-white illustration on p. 53.","write_up":"Plaza Del Governmiente Manila is a quaint piece by 19th- century artist Joseph Selleny. He was the official illustrator appointed to the Novara Expedition, a scientific voyage led by Austria that circumnavigated the world from 1857 to 1859. The purpose of this expedition was to conduct research, collect data in various fields of natural science, and to establish business relationships. In June of 1858, the Novara arrived in Manila. During its stay, Selleny painted his observations of day-to-day life in the Spanish colonized country.

This watercolor painting, suffused in hues of sepia, captures the scenic Plaza Mayor of Manila before its ruination in the 1863 Manila earthquake. Although the seismic event lasted for only 30 seconds, it devastated several structures in the city, including the historical landmarks illustrated in this piece - the Ayuntamiento de Manila, the Manila Cathedral, and Palacio del Gobernador. Today known as Plaza de Roma, this depiction of the old Plaza Mayor of Manila is a remembrance of the past that can only be observed through the relics of its time.

About two thousand sketches were said to be produced by the Austrian artist during the Novara mission, and this particular piece serves as a memento of the frigate’s eventful visit to the Philippines.
