Navarro. As a way to preserve the past, he portrayed in his canvases the picturesque countryside sceneries and traditional Filipino customs that were slowly fading during his time. His works belong to the school of Amorsolo, and its cinematic appeal can be observed in these featured pieces by Navarro, from the pastel-like palette to the mastery of space and light. A serene and nostalgic ambiance is radiated by the vistas. Sunlight is also a consistent element in Amorsolo paintings. Using his trademark backlighting technique, the National Artist outlined the figures against a characteristic warm glow. However, in an effort to eschew the classic yellow and orange tones of Amorsolo, Navarro deliberately avoided painting his sunlight in brilliant hues. He strived to create a palette unique to his works. In doing so, he was able to establish his own identity. Born in Ermita, Manila in 1921, Navarro was known to be an acclaimed disciple of the classical tradition and was regarded as one of the greatest historical preservation artists in the country.
