Zalameda’s early works were executed in watercolor—which he featured in his first oneman show in 1953— and later experimented with Cubism’s fragmented and seemingly abstracted style. Zalameda’s works from the 1970s onwards showcased a cubist approach to genre painting that combined figuration and abstraction. The landscape of his beloved Lucban likely influenced his scenes of everyday life, although Zalameda did not disclose the places that inspired his genre works.
Plausibly inspired by the vibrant and boisterous Pahiyas Festival in his hometown, these works mirror the sophisticated mural techniques Zalameda had studied in Mexico before embarking on his professional painting career. The vendors and their goods are clearly defined by the conspicuous and arresting delineation of shapes and the application of vivid colors. Linear elements become transparent as bolder pigments visually augment the subjects’ profile. The vendors almost appear as abstracted figures, but due to his brightly colored composition, Zalameda demonstrates his commitment to and non-abandonment of the concept of representational imagery. The vendors and the flowers merge to form a link harmoniously uniting abstraction, figuration, and color. (A.M.)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
