Although the famous gigantic works of Luna, such as the Spolarium and the La Batalla de Lepanto, are heavily influenced by Romanticism, the smaller pieces were nevertheless reflective of his style that flourished during his time in Europe. In this watercolor painting, the intense brushwork and vibrant color palette despite the medium’s subtle characteristics flaunts his flair for the dramatic, a characteristic that defines Juan Luna as an artist.
