Francisco was instrumental in revolutionizing the fine arts landscape of the Philippines. He departed from the prevailing style of the Amorsolo school and initiated the modernist movement with fellow founders of the Modern Triumvirate, Victorio Edades and Galo Ocampo. Furthermore, he single-handedly revived the forgotten art of murals and remained its most distinguished practitioner for nearly three decades.

Botong, the poet of Angono, created enormous canvases that chronicled the mythical world of the Filipino and its history, drawing inspiration from tradition, folklore, and legends. He was ardent to create a Philippine iconography — of noble, heroic figures from the country’s pre-Spanish past, because he believed that these were the true Filipinos, untainted by the colonizers and their foreign customs. In search of the Filipino identity, Botong sought material from the tribes of the South, such as the Maranao, and from the tribes of the North, the Ifugao of the Mountain Provinces. Botong is believed to have taken pride in the fact that neither of the groups had been successfully conquered by the Spanish and the Americans.

The oeuvres of Botong evoke the communal life of Filipino gatherings and celebrations. His painterly eye for composition, bold colors, and abiding faith in the folk values exemplified by the townspeople of Angono became the hallmark of his art.

) Botong was posthumously awarded the title National Artist of the Philippines in Visual Arts in 1973. He died on March 31, 1969, leaving a rich legacy and a new generation of followers. On November 4, 1975, the town of Angono, Rizal, held an exhibit titled “Gunita Kay Botong” which became an annual event. (P.I.R)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Carlos V.
