He began his artistic journey as a textbook\nillustrator for numerous local scientific publishers and\nthen worked as an instructor at the Audio Visual Department\nat the Federation of Christian Churches. Keen on developing\nhis skills through a formal academic setting, Saprid entered the\nUniversity of Philippines’ College of Fine Art. But, after finishing\njust one semester, Saprid was given the chance to pursue a\nMaster’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of Ohio, which he\ncompleted in 1954. His time abroad garnered him a considerable\namount of recognition through his numerous shows and exhibits\nacross the United States of America. This led him to apply rigorous\nexperimentation in order to achieve his unique artistic style that\nwould prove to be unmistakably his. <br /><br />Saprid’s unique use of brass, through the inclusion and\nimplementation of jagged angles in order to supplement the\nsubtle yet distinct rotund features hidden beneath the surface,\nhas often been seen as a synthesis of Western techniques and\ncharacteristically Asian and Filipino aesthetics. This is apparent\nthrough Saprid’s fascination with mythological and supernatural\nbeings that deviate from the traditional pantheon of western art.\nIn a way, Saprid’s creations challenge both the typical western\nand imperialist notion of fine art by not only reshaping its\nmethodology, but also but through the adoption of symbols that\nrekindle a sense of nationalism for a forgotten people.
