Committed to devote his life to painting, he took private lessons with the classic figurative painter Señor Ocampo. In 1917, Vitalis then ventured to San Francisco where he studied at the California School of Fine Arts while working as a hotel night porter and taking other odd jobs.

Wanting to solidify his artistic training more, Vitalis transferred to an artistic community in Montmartre, Paris, where he shared an atelier with two other artists around the place where Vincent Van Gogh stayed.

Permanently settling in Plestin-Leynes Grèves, Brittany, Vitalis slowly established his career in the wondrous place by exhibiting his paintings. Both locals and foreigners patronized his works, most notable is the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to West Germany.

Inspired by the Bayanihan Dance Company, the artist decided to go back to the Philippines which resulted in a homecoming exhibition held at the National Library in Manila, sponsored by then French Ambassador Francois Brière and the Bayanihan Folk Arts Association.

Painting murals at the Plestin Town Hall and Maison de Retraite, he was declared “the only honorary citizen” of Plestin-les-Greves, Brittany.
