Gläscher has stated,\nwhen asked about his work, that he is interested in nature not as an\nactually-existing body, but as a unique space for the imagination. Nature\nfor Gläscher is in-itself, a possibility for expression and not merely a\nbiological and ecological space. \n<br /><br />One unique aspect of Gläscher’s aesthetic is its stringent adherence\ntowards the photorealistic depiction of his scenery and landscape. This\nsimple yet contextually and historically complex synthesis of two media,\npainting and photography, challenges a popular distinction between\nthe two that was put forward by the semiologist and art theorist Roland\nBarthes. For Barthes, photography contains within itself a unique core\nelement; the existence of referent or a real flesh-and-blood and steeland-stone subject. A subject whose partial totality is forever captured\nand frozen in time. This distinction, for Barthes, is an important one\nbecause it brought forth new technical and conceptual possibilities\nthat were previously impossible with traditional media. But nowadays,\nit is hard to imagine Barthes’ idea as a fundamental truth given the\ndevelopment and progression of artistic technique and form. This is\nwhat Gläscher’s work attempts to question and personify; whether or\nnot an actually-existing referent changes the conceptual basis of a piece\nif it is perceived to be real anyway. Is what is true to be perceived as\nreal in this sense? In a way, Gläscher’s work exists as an important point\nwhere realism and surrealism intersect.
