But, unlike the typical usage of the viewfinder,\nDemetrio’s carefully constructed prism does not only\nphysically obscure one’s view, but also reveals the actuality\nof reality. Tinged with the frenetic energy of contemporary\nsocio-political theory and the emergent awareness of postcolonial and anti-imperialist ideas, Demetrio’s artistic project\nattempts to challenge the hegemonic structures that govern\nsociety and reality.<br /><br />n his Window Series, Demetrio explores the medium of\npainting by rendering his canvases three-dimensional through\nthe inclusion and addition of multiple physical layers. By doing\nso, he utilizes the concepts of volume, thickness, and space\nin order to bring one’s attention towards the multi-faceted\ninteractions of objects, subjects, and voices within a certain\nspace. This technique demystifies the work and brings it closer\nto reality, mirroring a certain kind of contextual and historical\npraxis. The result is a complex and affecting critique of religion\nand consumerism.<br /><br />Born in 1971, Demetrio “Demet” de la Cruz is the eldest of\nfour siblings.
