Going against the grain of his contemporaries who had been raised in the age of avant-garde styles, Tam Austria’s realistic art style seems to be a stubborn clinginess to the past. When asked about the pertinence of his style, he replied, “I don’t know. It seems pertinent for me.”

His return to the native is evident in this piece. Like many Filipino artists, Austria seems to be afflicted with horror vacui, that is fear of space. As a woman lies sitting on her knees at the center of the forest, every square inch of the canvas is covered in some sort of element, whether it be grass, trees, animals, or leaves. She sits serene, a vision of grace as animals gather around her peacefully as though she is Snow White. In a deviation from Snow White and her pale skin and red lips, Austria’s woman is bronze-brown and dusky as she converses with animals in a bamboo-filled grove.

“Quite visibly a realist” as he describes himself, Austria’s works echo the traditional beauty of the painters past and like them, his conflation of women and nature is evident. At the center of a bustling forest, the stalks of leaves and branches of trees bend away from her as they give her adequate space. She holds tangible power and as we can see, nature recognizes it. It holds space for her, welcoming the woman with reverence and respect. (Hannah Valiente)
