Characterized by her textured brush strokes and blond colors, Keka&rsquo;s oeuvre often examines the stories of the home, identity, gender, and displacement, with the latter a familiar topic for Keka as she had eventually moved to San Francisco and settled down, leaving behind her easel and her paint to raise her family.</p>\n<p>This 1999 Pitcher with White Tulips was created one year into her migration to California. Coming back to a common theme in her canvases, Keka depicts a homey kitchen stilllife devoid of human presence. However, it did not feel lonely &ndash; at the center of the table (and the focal point of this particular work) sits a bouquet of white tulips placed in an old jug, evidently placed there by the owner of the house. Keka employs a warm palette in this piece, with the walls a mix of yellow and orange with a pleasant yellow hue washing over the scene as though lit by the light of a roaring fire.</p>\n<p>Throughout her career, Keka found herself drawn to depicting scenes from the household. Her trademark interiors which she herself described as &ldquo;easy to the eye in terms of color and composition using a lot of thick paint\" tell a story even through empty rooms. With Pitcher with White Tulips, Keka depicts a warm, happy household as told through the state of their well-loved, well-lit kitchen. Her every item is accounted for, even in multiples, bearing the image of a cozy, albeit small space.</p>\n<p>The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home. In this place, food is made, memories are created, and familial heirlooms are passed from generation to generation. Here, Keka gives life to the feminine and the domestic, giving the home a multi-layered perspective and emphasizing the familial in her works. In her personal life, she had also prioritized her family &ndash; soon after building her own family, Keka stopped her thenbustling career, only coming back after almost 20 years of rest.
