His history with glass goes way back, in the confines of his ancestral home in Taal, Batangas. His great-grandfather Antonio Medina was an artist himself, making hand-painted room panel dividers adorned with glass. He watched as sunlight bounced off and into pieces of glass, malleable and versatile despite the glass’s hard quality.
\n
His 2020 Indomitable Spirit echoes Orlina’s rough journey to mastering glass. Following his early works full of sharp edges and straight lines, Indomitable Spirit feels like Orlina’s life story and his journey to becoming the Father of Philippine Glass Sculpture.
\n
Orlina first ventured out into the art world as an architect, and perhaps that is the reason for the practicality of his glass sculpture. “Form over function,” he was taught at the University of Santo Tomas.
\n
“You must have a good design but if it cannot be built then you will have a problem. In architecture, function is as important as the design; it’s no good if it doesn’t work”, Orlina recounts in a 2018 article in The Phil Biz News entitled Ramon Orlina: Shattering the glass ceiling.
\n
However, when he left architecture and ventured into creating glass sculpture, he was stumped. Stepping into the cold-cutting method of glass creation instead of hot blowing technique left Orlina with virtually no one to teach him the way. He was the pioneer of this art method and he had no choice but to blindly feel his way as he conceptualized, cut, ground, and polished a block of glass. He was baptized not in the fire but through the cold, unforgiving surface of the glass.
\n
Indomitable Spirit could best describe Orlina’s early works. Being a trailblazer meant forging your own path, armed not by any mentor for there is none but with your own wits and talents.
\n
“No one in this country, the Philippines, Asia, or anywhere on the entire planet ever did what he did,” Cid Reyes wrote in Visions in Glass. “Artists like Michaelangelo, Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, and Constantin Brancusi never ventured into the world of glass sculpture as Orlina did.”
\n
Indeed, Orlina’s indomitable spirit spurred him on an uncharted path. He was however rewarded for his unprecedented gamble as Orlina’s works survived the tempering of time and hailed him as an innovator in his field second to none.
