Rather than titling his works with non-descript labels which was almost de rigueur among abstract painters, Joya’s titles were objective and vivid, anchoring his compositions to natural phenomena, to geographic locations, to artistic creations. This may have been prompted by his foray into figuration at the beginning of his career, before he fully embraced the aesthetic of nonrepresentational art.
\n
Possibly unique in his oeuvre were works that commemorated historical events, such as People Power, which Joya painted in 1986. Still elated from the swell of emotions of the bloodless revolution, the master created a work that captured the celebratory mood of the occasion. Made out of rice paper, diaphanous shapes with fibrous elements—unique to the visual language of Joya—leap out across the canvas punctuated by dots and curvilinear lines that dance in tempo with the seemingly organic forms. The overall composition is one of heady exaltation, evoking banners waving in the wind and a shower of confetti.
\n
The layer-upon-layer of acrylic collage is set against an intoxicating coral background, which shows a perfect disc symbolizing the sun. Perhaps, it signifies that a new beginning has dawned, drenching everything in its blessed light. While other artists may have marked the EDSA Revolution in a straightforward figurative manner by quoting the sights and sounds of the event, Joya, true to his vision, presented instead a visual translation of its energy and momentum, the atmosphere of jubilation, and the expectation of hope that the first People Power promised to the Filipino people.
","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":2200000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":2200000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":2643520,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":57018,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/107/141/lot/112.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":111,"next":113,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
