Emmanuel Garibay was born in Kidapawan, North Cotabato, but his family shortly moved to Davao and lived there before he went to Los Baños, Laguna to study college. He grew up in a fun and loving family and had a happy childhood. In college, Garibay first took up Sociology, a program that introduced him to various perspectives on human life, allowing him to understand how society and one’s personal lives relate. Later on, he took an interest in painting and transferred to UP Diliman’s Fine Arts program. His college years opened his eyes to the rather depressing and appalling reality of the Filipinos, prompting him to create works that revolved around his time’s societal and political conditions.

Seemingly simple, there is an underlying somber mood in Garibay’s 2015 Aplikante. This oil on wood piece depicts a young man, perhaps just graduated from college, wearing formal attire and trying to look as presentable as possible in hopes of finding a job. The expression on his face and body language—eyes looking at a distance and hands keeping close to himself—suggests a hint of envy and embarrassment, probably brought by looking at his co-applicants who seem to be more affluent and well-off.

Garibay creatively used the plank of carved wood, only painting his image on the jutted part and leaving the submerged areas untouched, giving his piece the illusion of a framed mirror. Indeed, this figure is a reflection of the unfortunate reality of the common folk, showing resiliency and standing tall in the face of adversity. Despite his wavering confidence, he still continues to go through with his application, believing that landing a good job will elevate his life in the future. (Jessica Magno)
