Aseasoned artist and formidable professor, Florencio Concepcion left an indelible mark on the Philippine art scene. He studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines while working as an illustrator for various comic strips and publications. Afterward, he flew to Rome and earned his Master of Arts degree at the Regge Accademia di Belle Arti in 1964. Upon returning to the Philippines, he declined several invites for exhibitions and commissions. Instead, he pursued a career in the academe. He taught at the University of the East, where he mentored would-be acclaimed artists Augusto Albor, Romulo Galicano, and Lao Lianben, leaving a lasting influence on their lives and careers.

Concepcion’s oeuvre offers a quieter side of abstract expressionism, characterized by his preference for lighter hues and ingenious blending of colors. This artistic style allows his canvases to evoke a sense of calm and comfort. This 1981 untitled work bears Concepcion’s exceptional brushwork— smeared-like but carefully thought of. In this piece, he started by painting the borders of his canvas black, then adding layers of yellow and blending them together, with a thick streak of green peeking on one side. Despite the absence of actual shapes and objects, his dexterous hands still capture the viewers’ innermost feelings and emotions.

The name Florencio Concepcion may not be as known as his contemporaries in Philippine visual arts. Still, his evocative canvases and the lessons and influences he imbued into his students’ lives will always remain. (Jessica Magno)
