Ang Kiukok’s 1984 work echoes his myriad of Christ works. A lapsed convert to Catholicism, Ang’s depictions of Jesus Christ are reverent of the Redeemer while critical of the violence He had undergone. He does not shy away from portraying the gruesome horrors His body has undergone, His limbs sharp and unnaturally bent as He lies hanging from the cross.

This particular depiction is incredibly interesting. Ang’s Christ has His limbs contorted to almost impossible shapes, so much so that one cannot distinguish if He was hanging on his front or viewed from the side. The perspective was skewed with His feet and hands comparatively bigger than His body. In fact, His head can barely be seen; without the crown of thorns, one could even see His head.

Ang’s mastery of illusion is also evident. Should one stand and tilt their head as they view the painting, Christ’s body transforms. The crown of thorns on His head becomes the eye of a fish, hung limply on a piece of wood. His feet are visibly pierced with nails, and as an artistic liberty, His arms, instead of being pinned on either side of the cross, hang limply by His side. It seems as though He was punctured through the shoulders.

“Come, follow Me,” He said in Matthew 4:19, “and I will make you fishers of men.” He had intended for them to reel in more followers from the sea of sinners, saving them from eternal damnation. However, at the cross, Christ had now become the proverbial sacrificial lamb, betrayed by the people He aimed to save.

Through his brutal depiction, Ang portrays just how horrible Christ’s crucifixion truly is, how grotesque the body would be should it be subjected to an ordeal as horrible as crucifixion. Here, Christ seems to have breathed His final breath – gravity has affected His body with His hands and feet hanging lifelessly. Through such a harrowing depiction, Ang has emphasized Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on the cross, softening nothing. (Hannah Valiente)
