Juvenal Sansó has a penchant for twisting ordinary landscapes and painting them in his own light and perspective, creating a hazy, dreamlike, and sometimes distorted image. His masterful strokes and clever use of colors allow him to add a mysterious flair to his works. Importantly, he still manages to convey a profound sense of serenity that can be deeply felt by his viewers, evoking a feeling of calm and peace.

Unidiverted Coast, painted in 1972, features a peaceful coastal view with mossy outcrops and rock formations reflected in the calm, clear waters. A translucent circle was placed above the horizon line—the moon slowly peeking out. This symbol and Sansó’s use of a green and blue-dominated palette signify the transition from a cool afternoon to the gradually approaching nighttime. The artist aptly used black and white paint to add shadows and highlights, successfully enlivening his work.

His fateful friendship with Yves le Dantec and his family exposed Juvenal Sansó to the beauty of the Brittany Coast in France. Charmed, Sansó made it his residence for fifty years before returning to the Philippines in 2008. The region’s ever-changing landscape not only birthed Sansó’s sublime Brittany series but also played a crucial role in his emotional healing, helping him overcome his wartime traumas.
