A son of an architect, Max Balabat has had a natural affinity for art and architecture since his childhood. Growing up surrounded by design and creativity, he first followed his father’s footsteps when he took up architecture at the University of the East. However, his artistic career and interest pivoted and he soon transferred to Fine Arts. Despite this transition, the influence of architecture remains deeply embedded in his work; he is partial to mixing his art with architecture as he creates a beguiling portrayal of shanties, buildings, and towering skyscrapers in his style of grids, patterns, discrepant lines, and mismatched images.

In 2021, Balatbat mounted an exhibition at León Gallery International. Entitled Siyudad (a play on the phrase “See you, Dad”), this exhibit is a homage to his late father Architect Romy Balatbat as he portrays impressive architectural structures that remind its viewers of urban landscapes and structures.

This piece, dated a decade before his Siyudad exhibit, shows an echo of what his Siyudad pieces would be. Overlapping patterns and colors create an abstract approximation of an architectural landscape. “Rich in metaphor and emotive content, his compositions are layered depictions of visceral narratives of the personal and communal,” his artist bio for his Siyudad exhibition wrote. “Both real and conjured, these places are stored locations which consistently provide the muse for creative engagement.” (Hannah Valiente)
