Lao Lianben’s Bone exemplifies the artist’s evocation of Zen principles and beliefs in his works. As with most of his works, Bone is primarily orchestrated through shades of whites and grays; the entire canvas is cracked and creasing with the exception of a clean and untouched rectangle in the middle, unspoiled and saved by the gray border that surrounds it.

In Japanese traditional art, wabi-sabi is the appreciation of beauty despite and because of its imperfections. \"An intuitive appreciation,” wrote Andrew Juniper in Wabi Sabi: The Japanese Art of Impermanence, “of ephemeral beauty in the physical world that reflects the irreversible flow of life in the spiritual world.”

Bones depicts that ephemerality. Zen Buddhism and Shinto were instrumental in the development of wabi-sabi and Lao’s employment of Zen aesthetics is abundant in Bones and its wabi-sabi design. He layered paint after paint before letting it crack and crumble. The sole piece of untouched canvas lies safe and protected, away from corruption. “

Zen Buddhism principles, practices, and mysticism have always fascinated me,” Lao told Lala Singian in a 2023 Lifestyle Inquirer interview. “The image of Buddha is enigmatic – impregnable – quiet in form. I do not practice Buddhism, but I am intrigued by it. When I observe monks in their daily way of life, they allow me to imagine and create stories in my head. My eyes enable me to form ideas and come up with motifs for my paintings.”

Indeed, Lao’s Bone incorporates a salient Japanese aesthetic and central tenet of Zen Buddhism – that is, meditation and silence. In the midst of a cracked and crumbling world, it is prudent for one to turn their view inward and protect their peace through mindful meditation and cognizant actions. (Hannah Valiente)
