He created a body of work that challenged the classical tradition which has been, for a long time, the status quo. Here, he boldly embraced distortion, uncaring of the grotesqueries that may come out of it as he portrays the inner turmoil as though it were physical.
\n
However, barring his figurative expressionist works which featured distorted figures, Onib also dabbled in still lifes and landscapes. These works are still imbued with Onib’s distinctive vision as he liberally stretched out the perspective and used unnatural colors. In this 1994 work, he portrays three vases sitting atop a small round table in vibrant, warm red and yellows. Even in a work devoid of his extreme distortion, Onib’s signature style still shines; the vases stretch upward with just too much length as to look unnatural, the colors are a smidge too warm, the black shadows a bit too burnt.
\n
A still life is, in and of itself, a snapshot of an intriguing story. With this untitled work, Onib tells the story of an everyman, their quaint collection of vases a shot of beauty within their dreary lives.
