Cesar Legaspi’s prolific artistic career, spanning almost 6 decades, left a collection of works that illustrate Philippine modern art's evolution. He was one of the leading Filipino neo- realists; his cubist-inspired paintings unveil the social injustices and hardships faced by the Filipinos.

Devoid of his infamous fragmented torsos, Pag-aani (Harvest) nonetheless screams a quintessential Cesar Legaspi piece. Here, the artist depicted a familiar scene during harvest season, with one of the farmers diligently working at the back while the other is seen holding his harvested palay and seems to be presenting it to the viewers. With his figures’ heads covered in cloth and with the visible orange blotch–signifying a sun–in the sky, Legaspi successfully presented the hardworking Filipinos, even under the scorching heat of the sun. However, this image also has an underlying depressing layer–evident from his figure’s grim expression. Our farmers are often belittled, overworked, and underestimated.

Cesar Legaspi’s artistic journey is a testament to his dedication and commitment. His developed technique, a product of his incessant practice and study, showcases his ingenuity. In 1963, he mounted his first one-man show at the Luz Gallery, a milestone that would be followed by several solo and collaborative exhibitions locally and internationally. In 1990, four years before his demise, he was honored with the National Artist for Painting Award, recognizing his unwavering dedication to his craft. (Jessica Magno)
