Regarded as the “master of rural landscape,” Fernando Amorsolo painted the Philippine art scene with his sunlit landscapes and archetypal Filipino folk activities-themed masterpieces. Even after his death, his influence and undying legacy in the art scene continue to inspire and instill a deep sense of national pride imbued in the large body of artworks he had left.

His 1948 Harvest illustrates a bountiful harvest season, one of the maestro’s famed themes. In view, a group of people huddle around basket after basket of their harvested goods. On one side is a woman tending to the makeshift charcoal stove, cooking lunch to be shared by her and her companions. This reflects the Filipinos’ close kin connection, especially in the small barrios, regardless of whether they were blood-related or just mere neighbors. Amorsolo’s sun spreads a comforting warmth and radiance to his image, as befits an occasion worth celebrating—reflected on his figures’ smiling and happy faces.

“His art reaches out; it does not intimidate, confound or alienate,” May Lyn L. Cruz, curator for the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, writes about the maestro. His artistic virtuosity is not just a skill but a force that forges a deep emotional connection with his paintings, demonstrating the power of his artistry. Indeed, Amorsolo’s works, even his wartime series, resonate deeply with the hearts and lives of the Filipinos.
