Lao Lianben’s Sense of Light perfectly illustrates Lao's abstractive force. Minimalist and evocative, it is washed with a sense of calm. The simple lines of monochromatic black and white evoke the quietude of Zen Buddhism, a source of inspiration that bleeds into every work he creates.

Sense of Light acts as a gateway into a world of profundity and spirituality. Surrounding the white canvas with Lao’s signature textured strokes, they mimic the pouring rain and set a portal of stillness within the canvas. Every controlled brush stroke is a slow revelation of one’s psyche and the cleansing that comes with the rain.

Lao’s evocation of the Japanese philosophical concept of wabisabi is also highly evident. The imperfect, impermanent, and the incomplete – a tenet of wabi-sabi –is elevated as one finds beauty within them and not despite of. Lao, in the same vein as that philosophical thought, finds beauty in the most basic and natural objects. The simple fall of rain against a backdrop of white becomes more interesting and gives the object a greater meditative power.

“When I am painting, I like to build up materials into several layers. Not necessarily incorporating actual found objects, but at least try to create an impression of actual objects, such as stones or natural occurrences of water or soot exhausted from a flame,” he says in a Lifestyle Inquirer interview with Lala Singian in 2023. Indeed, Lao’s Sense of Light, through all its deliberate layers, creates a powerful piece that speaks of intuition, introspection, and mysticism. (Hannah Valiente)
