With a distinct folk charm, Antonio Austria’s works revolve around the Filipinos’ day-to-day objects and everyday scenes. His canvases are adorned with jeepneys, sari-sari stores, and vendors of different kinds, providing masterpieces that evoke a strong sense of nostalgia and sentimentality.

In Mga Magpuputo, Austria unveils the painstaking process behind one of the Filipinos’ favorite snacks, one that’s most of the time included on the menu for different occasions: puto. This 1986 oil on canvas piece portrays a bustling kitchen with six women; each focused on their tasks: mixing and pouring the batter into the molding trays, putting them into the steamer, and cooling down the cooked putos. Hence, this painting not only captures the process of making puto but also the communal aspect of Filipino culture, where chores are often shared among family and friends.

This painting bears his signature colors, unique art style, and distinct figures reminiscent of a child’s oil pastel drawing, making it an undeniable Antonio Austria piece. His unique art style, though some may find it funny and childish, is a testament to his individuality and creativity.
