His early immersion in music as well as his background as a musician (he played the saxophone) greatly influenced his harmonious perspective on colors and led to his creation of artworks that retained the improvisation quality of free jazz that dominated the Bay Area.</p>\n<p>This 1966 piece, on the other hand, belongs to Valledor&rsquo;s 1960s SoHo, New York era. On the opposite coast, he cultivated his interests in minimalism and conceptualism. Here, he became a member of the influential Park Place Gallery, where he delved into his avant-garde sensibilities.</p>\n<p>These influences &ndash; his jazz background and these modern influences &ndash; are evident in this piece. He abandoned gestural abstract expressionism and picked up a hard-edge painting style that he would be known for, abruptly transitioning from sea greens to cool grays. &ldquo;[He] started to explore reduced palettes, geometric shapes, and the spatial dimension of color,&rdquo; Lawrence Rinder wrote in \"Everything Pellucid: The Paintings of Leo Valledor\" in 2006.\" This wasn't the end of his dive into the jazz-like spirit, it was the beginning. Geometry was his style and color was his tone.&rdquo;</p>\n<p>Valledor would eventually return to California where he continued his avant-garde art. He would also be known as a pioneer of the Minimalist movement, an art movement that dominated the 1970s.
