Throughout his illustrious career, Onib Olmedo has distinguished himself as an expressionistic and surrealistic artist. Adept with distortion and despair, Onib’s works veer towards the fantastical as he distorts his figures, making the human body the personification of desperation and despondency.

\n

With the Boxer in the Corner, Onib’s signature distortion is evident but the despair that comes with it needs a little harder digging to get to. The titular boxer sits down on a tiny, wooden chair, likely between breaks of the match. Onib plays around with perspective as he stretches the boxer to occupy as much space as possible while retaining the small chair. His expression is small and almost indiscernible but the worry is palpable. During the break of this match, he wonders, “Could I win this match?”

The cool blues and grays used are a stark contrast to the boxing ring’s usual red hue. This usage submerges the piece into melancholy, a reflection of this dejected boxer. Even amid a highintensity and career-breaking event, Onib’s figures are still prone to sorrow and mournfulness, and Boxer in the Corner synthetized Onib’s expressionistic flair, interweaving triumph and despair in one fine piece.
