Abstractionist Augusto Albor’s minimalist canvases often veer into the metaphysical. Described by artist and writer Cid Reyes as “the Filipino abstractionist supreme,” this sentiment is echoed by National Artist Arturo Luz who stated: “Augusto Albor is quite simply the best that the Philippines has to offer.”

His 1990 work titled Restructure 7/90 is a shining example of Albor’s minimalist prowess. Painting over stainless steel, Restructure 7/90 may be an exception from his minimal and subtle color register with its varied color scheme but it is no less Albor’s trademark minimalism. On one side of the piece, he mimics black burn marks on a steel grey background, emulating a burnt piece of metal; on the other side, he layers paint over paint, the layers of browns on the metal an interesting copy of a piece of parchment. This is quite a tall task, something Albor successfully translated in his work.

“He has set for himself the insanely ambitious task of translating physics into painting ... Abstraction, after all, is a language of the spirit,” Cid Reyes writes in Albor’s monograph Immaterial. “Over four decades of artmaking with a body of works imbued with a sustained quiet energy that is at once calming and invigorating... integrating the wonders of pictorial space that opens up to all... possibilities that have no need for the armature of form and color.” (Hannah Valiente)
