The worlds created within Ang Kiukok’s cut through the flowery surface and straight into the nitty-gritty of the world. Often shocking his viewers with his sharp edges and even sharper colors, his works are a sight to behold as he bears open to the world the sides people often want to overlook.

In this 1979 piece, Kiukok leaves the gritty colors but retains the edges he is known for. However, despite the brightness of the piece, one could ascertain a certain darkness that hides behind its yellow and blue hues. Here, one should be wary of the bright sunlight and the possible horrors they could uncover.

Kiukok does not dilute his works to make them more palatable for the general public; instead, he challenges his viewers to rise to the challenge of seeing as he does. In this piece, he bends to the public’s will but still, he does not completely surrender. He hides behind the facade of a cheerful environment, thus infusing his works with a sense of expressiveness that transcends definitions and boundaries. (Hannah Valiente)
