Though the ca&ntilde;ao was practiced for a multitude of reasons, it is mostly considered a socio-religious ritual of offering and thanksgiving. In this practice, livestock like chickens, pigs, or carabaos are slit open, allowing for a wooden stick to be thrust into the animal&rsquo;s heart. These animals are then chopped and cooked depending on their species &ndash; commonly the pigs are boiled in water and some spice to create watwat while the chickens are made into pinikpikan.</p>\n<p>Pacquing&rsquo;s Slit and Thrust series, therefore, is an amalgamation of Pacquing&rsquo;s paintings as the mostly plain white background is cut through as a &ldquo;stick&rdquo; seemingly impales the middle of the canvas, reminiscent of the process of ca&ntilde;ao. With this particular Slit and Thrust piece, the large-scale Slit and Thrust #5, the stick is tied with a piece of cloth, breaking the stillness of the piece.</p>\n<p>Aside from acting as a homage to this traditional practice, Pacquing&rsquo;s Slit and Thrust series also lays the artist&rsquo;s process of assembling materials into his work with this series inserting various materials into the fold that range from household objects, common everyday items, and the likes.</p>\n<p>&ldquo;This bold act of inserting these media shifts the viewers&rsquo; vantage point from the monumental painting pieces to each piece's focal point creating a dynamic relationship between unassumingly unrelated pieces,&rdquo; writes this series&rsquo;s exhibition notes.
