Born to a pair of illustrious Filipino painters, painting and storytelling seem to be in Marcel Antonio’s blood. He was considered one of the most promising talents in contemporary Philippine art while still studying for his undergraduate degree at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Art and thus began a career whose works are deeply embedded in the viewer’s collective consciousness.

The Pose makes use of Antonio’s sensual lines and dramatic colorings. There is a sense of playfulness to the piece – a woman slumbers peacefully, one strap of her top falling down her shoulders as her hand hangs off the bed. A rose lies on the floor as though she is holding it and accidentally lets it go when she finally falls asleep. A man, dressed in a simple jester costume, is quietly sneaking in as the woman’s cat glares at him from over its shoulder.

He had once told the blog Looking for Juan in a 2021 interview that an early modernist 1915 Chagall painting called The Poet Reclining was his first encounter with the power of art. “ I remember spending more time just looking at this particular image with the thought, ‘Does such a magical world exist? And if yes, I'd like to go and see for myself one day,’” he had thought. Indeed, Chagall’s influence is evident even this far into Antonio’s oeuvre.
