Son of a Methodist pastor, religious metaphors snake their way into Garibay’s work as befitting an oeuvre overflowing with Filipino imagery, events of cultural and historical significance, and political criticism.
\n
This 2001 Profane, like many of his works, combines the aspects that made Garibay’s oeuvre stand out for his clientele. A cheeky yet scathing criticism, Profane may look like it does not contain Garibay’s usual fantastical elements but it is overflowing with religious connotations. One of the most easily identifiable markers of this piece is the pair of hands clasped tightly together as though in prayer. The person (which was not portrayed except their praying hands) seems to be holding an image of a man of some sort – he has his eyes closed, his sinewy body frail and thin. Around the frame of the picture are a ticking clock and a single pink rose whose vines and thorns tangle through the border.
\n
As an adjective, profane refers to contempt or irreverence to what is considered sacred. Garibay’s Profane acts the same way, if with a bit of a twist. The hands that cradle the broken, beaten image of the man echo the way one might carry an image of a saint. Their hands are clasped in an everlasting prayer, holding against hope for a miracle. However, instead of the divine, this person reveres a broken man. This desecrated version of the sacred takes center stage and yet he is still worshiped. Garibay’s Profane is still irreverent but despite this (or perhaps because of it), it is still sacred, worshipped, and praised.
