The worlds within the canvases of Prudencio Lamarroza are imbued with childhood colors and nostalgic memories. Born in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, Lamarroza spent his childhood frolicking on the banks of the majestic Chico and Amburayan Rivers and this practice served as a great inspiration as he cultivated his artistic career. Though the artist was notably private (barring banal comments on sketchbooks and drawings, he left no journal or notes about his personal life), it is hard not to see the riverbanks in his canvases which are often full of lush green trees and a multitude of rocks, all done in a surrealistic style.

This piece echoes the signature Lamarroza flair as he depicts a riverbank studded with colorful rocks. A sturdy tree takes center stage and, like the rocks at its feet, it bears vibrant patterns and unnatural colors on its trunk. Between the shores and the distant mountainous horizon is a mighty river, peaceful and blue as it cuts through the scene.

Manuel D. Duldunao wrote in Lamarroza’s monograph: “If there is an absolute originality in Lamarroza, it lies in his gift of pure color, for which no amount of reproduction prepares you.” Here, Lamarroza’s colors explode, intensely evocative as he rewards the viewers with vivid vermilions, steely grays, azure blues, and moss greens. Every crevice of Lamarroza’s canvas is covered, and yet it had never felt crowded. He is a master at composition and he puts his unique perspective at the forefront of his dreamlike oeuvre. As a result, his canvas is overflowing with a tinge of nostalgia and trinkets of a summertime afternoon in the sun, a memory that returns again and again not just for Lamarroza but for his audience as well.
