Throughout Lao Lianben’s illustrious career, he has drawn inspiration from various sources, from Chinese poetry and calligraphy to Japanese aesthetics. With this work, the Japanese aesthetic of shibusa is highly evident.

\n

Shibusa highlights subtle and unobtrusive beauty. Similar to wabi-sabi – a Japanese aesthetic Lao had also utilized before – shibusa exalts simplicity above all else; however, unlike wabi-sabi, it does not hone its focus on the imperfections its objects may have. Wabi and sabi may be shubui objects but not all shibui objects are wabi and sabi.

\n

With this work, several elements of shibusa are evident. Painted on a plain white canvas, the viewer can see very faint gray brush strokes, one after the other in infinite looping doors. The brush strokes get progressively darker and smaller as it gets to the center and at the middle is a shining white spot – the light at the end of the tunnel.

Matthew E. May described the aesthetic in his The Shibumi Strategy as “elegant simplicity, effortless effectiveness, understated excellence, [and] beautiful imperfection.” This work is imbued with that quality, with its underlying life breathing into Lao’s work, creating a piece that is conscious in its attempt to understand the world around it.
