In 1924, he joined the then-American-run Philippine Free Press editorial staff and eventually became its chief artist. At the Free Press, Pereira produced a weekly editorial cartoon with a style he derived from painting, with bold washes injecting a dramatic atmosphere to the scene.
\n
As an artist, Pereira’s oeuvre is Filipino through and through— evident in his depiction of the Filipina maidens, pastoral landscapes, and genre themes. Pereira’s Dalaga illustrates a Filipina maiden clad in pink plaid balintawak clothing, a variation of the classic terno, with its almost transparent butterfly sleeves, a matching alampay, and a saya with a tapis hung around her waist. With his masterful strokes, the artist painstakingly captured the intricate details on her maiden’s clothes: its see-through sleeves and the fabric’s texture. Sporting a wide and sweet smile, wearing traditional Filipino clothing, and having a honey-colored complexion, Pereira’s women are undeniably Filipino in and out; they are closest to reality, tangible reflections of countryside women.
\n
Being Amorsolo’s contemporary and a colleague at the Pacific Commercial Company, their works were a bit similar—subject and light—but also different from each other. Pereira’s light is sweeter and more exuberant, alluding to his penchant for utilizing orange and pink hues. His deft hands could create illusions of detail with his masterful strokes and insightful colorwork; his tonal values showed incredible depth. Indeed, this 1938 piece exemplifies Jose Pereira’s effervescent light and artistry, flawlessly encapsulating the Filipinas’ timeless beauty.
