Ang Kiukok’s 1993 Mother and Child, on first sight, removes the edge usually evident in his works. Depicting his Madonna tightly cradling her child, Ang makes the love between them palpable through their body language – their heads are bent to an almost impossible angle as they press their cheeks together in a symbol of love.

This Mother and Child is created near a transition period for the artist. With brighter colors and softer colors, his mother and child are a delightful difference from his angst-filled works. Here, he focused not on the angry feelings nor did he emphasize such inhuman twisting of the limbs. Instead, he focused on the warmth of family, of the maternal bond he had been quite fond of.

Alfredo Roces writes in Kiukok: Deconstructing Despair that his “Mother and child tie each other up into one interdependently intertwined knot: each needs the other.” This is evident in this work. His pair is tied together in an inextricable embrace, so tight it almost looks uncomfortable. Here, Kiukok portrays a core of what motherhood should be – encompassing, all-loving, and hands-on.
