As his art studies and experiences deepened, he began experimenting with different styles and mediums. Before he knew it, he had already made over a hundred paintings and drawings, ranging from expressionism, fauvism, and impressionism to portraits, nude studies, still life, and landscape paintings in graphite, charcoal, oil, acrylic, and watercolor.</p>\n<p>Roces considers his private tutoring lessons under the tutelage of the esteemed artist and UP Professor Dominador Casta&ntilde;eda as the beginning of his long-standing and illustrious career. These two&mdash;back-to-back&mdash;oil on wood paintings are still life studies he did in 1949, at age 17, in one of their art sessions. Roces&rsquo; artistic prowess not only manifests in his canvases but also bleeds through his words as one of the most notable authors of Philippine art books. In 1974, the Art Association of the Philippines honored him with an Artist of the Year award.
